Between Two Shores

cyanotype, joss paper

38 x 39 x 7 in.

Cyanotypes depicting the Pacific Ocean from the shores of Washington State and Taiwan—facing west and facing east, respectively––are folded into forms reminiscent of ancestral shrines. Propped on the altars are sheets of joss paper, gradually burnt using my deceased grandfather’s magnifying glass and sunlight. Connecting the sky and sea became a private reconciliation between my ancestry and American experience.
