In thinking about oceans and vast distances, the leaving and the arriving, a ship’s bell is often used for safety—a warning signal in anticipation of an imminent threat. What must you be prepared to lose to assimilate? In what ways do we try to prove ourselves citizen and at what cost? What are our internal negotiations toward safety? In what ways is the value of human life dependent on the consumption of grand achievements, superhuman ability, and/or violence in a country that celebrates with death?
