The night before I moved across the country from Washington State, my sister announced that she was expecting. I was faced with a sense of loss as I came to terms with the imminent and inevitable change in our relationship. As a result, I began to contemplate my seat at the dinner table, a familial gathering space—how my own position fills the gap of a deceased love one or vacates to make room for new family members. Never Mine to Keep is ultimately an acknowledgment of sisterhood and shifting intimate relationships.
